Darebin United

Founded in 1975 by Greek-Australian immigrants Darebin United are a football club based in Thornbury, Victoria whom feature five different teams and the best match day canteen food in the Northern suburbs.

The five teams include a men’s seniors and reserves team, a men’s thirds team, a boys U/14 team and a women’s team. Up until 2013 the club only had two teams and since then it has grown and added 3 more.

Darebin’s home ground since 2005 has been Mayer Park located next to the Northcote golf course. A forced relocation for the club occurred after Darebin’s former home HLT Oulton Park was refurbished by the council.

Currently the Men’s senior team compete in State League 3 North-West the highest level of competition the clubs has competed in since 2005.

The late 1990’s and early 2000’s featured several years of promotion for the club. The years 1999, 2000 and 2003 were successful for the club as it was promoted in each of these years. However, a free fall from 2005 to 2009 saw the club drop down 3 divisions in quick succession. The years 2005 and 2009 in particular were difficult times for the men’s senior team with them only accumulating 8 and 10 points respectively across those seasons.

Under a new committee from the 2010 season onwards which saw an immediate change in the clubs fortunes with the Men’s senior team recording its most amount of points in a season since 2003. Since 2010 the club has surged up from the then Provisional League 3 North West to the State League 3 North-West. Promotion in 2012 and 2014 for the men’s senior team alongside a reserve grade title in 2012 has seen the club fly up the Victorian lower leagues.

When in the same division as neighboring Greek side West Preston, both clubs play off for the ‘Darebin Community Cup’ proudly supported by Northcote City. In 2014 season Darebin retained the club winning comfortably on aggregate across the two games.
